About 3.5 million years ago, the earth entered a warm phase when lush abundance returned throughout the world including east Africa where humans first evolved. A species of upright ape may have begun consuming a large amount of scavenged (leftover) meat causing the stomach and intestines to reduce by 40% and brain and body size to enlarge.
